VERSAILLES – The Versailles volleyball team lost its Midwest Athletic Conference opener in four sets Thursday evening, falling 25-16, 25-16, 20-25, 25-16 to Marion Local.

“Errors again,” Versailles coach Karla Frilling said. “Inconsistency, errors in our offense … it’s coming back to haunt us every game so we’ve got to make a change.”

The match didn’t start off well for Versailles as the Tigers never led in the opening set. It was close midway through the set with Marion holding a slim 11-9 lead, but then the Flyers went on a 14-7 run to close out the game and go up 1-0 in the match.

Versailles started out better in the second set and took its first lead of the night at 9-8, which prompted Marion Local to use its first timeout of the evening.

Versailles scored the first two points out of the timeout, but then Marion Local rebounded. The Flyers tied it at 11-11 and then 12-12 and 13-13. From there Marion Local took control and scored 12 of the next 15 points to win 25-16 again and go up two games to none.

After a rough start to the match, Versailles showed more strong flashes in the third set. Down 5-2, Versailles went on a 9-0 run with Lauren Monnin’s serving helping the Tigers go ahead 11-5. Versailles never gave up the lead and won 25-20 to force a fourth game.

“It just wasn’t enough,” Frilling said. “One game isn’t enough to win a match.”

It wasn’t enough as Marion Local took control early in the fourth set. From a 3-3 tie the Flyers scored 17 of the next 20 points to go up 20-6. Versailles made a strong push at the end but couldn’t overcome the large deficit, losing 25-16 to lose the match 3-1.

“When things aren’t going your way, you’ve got to put all the cards out on the table,” Frilling said. “You can’t stand by and just watch it. You’ve got to stop the bleeding. You’ve got to do something. We’re trying to get the right people on the court. Maybe one of these days we’ll figure it out.”

One bright spot for Versailles on Thursday was sophomore Danielle Winner.

“She made a difference,” Frilling said. “But we can’t just rely on one person to be the difference. She can make a difference for three rotations, but we need everybody out there with that kind of urgency.”
