Greenville girls tennis team defeats Van Wert on senior night

GREENVILLE – The Greenville girls tennis team won its senior night match on Monday, defeating Van Wert 4-1.

Greenville’s two seniors, Mallory Rich and Neeps Kaur, teamed up in first doubles on Monday and beat Katie Trittschuh and Phoebe Eutsler 6-1, 5-7, 7-5. The Greenville duo was down 5-2 in the third set but battled back to win the next five games and win the match.

With the win Kaur and Rich improved to 7-3 on the season as doubles partners.

“They’re having a good season,” Greenville coach Jim Koontz said of his two seniors. “I’m happy for them and proud of them.”

Greenville also honored foreign exchange student Anja Mertel, who is from Germany, on Monday. She lost in first singles to Ali Moreland 6-4, 6-0.

“She’s really helped us out a lot,” Koontz said of Mertel’s play this season. “Big help. She’s a good kid, too.”

In second singles Greenville’s Anna Manges beat Kali Agler 6-2, 6-5. At third singles the Lady Wave’s Molly Hunt beat Emma Verville 6-1, 7-5.

In the second doubles match Greenville’s Larisa Schmitmeyer and Casey Malott beat Jess Agler and Sierra Blakcmore 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.

Greenville improved to 10-8 on the season with Monday’s win while Van Wert fell to 8-6.

In junior varsity action Greenville’s doubles team of Marabelle Lance and Hannah Gulley won their match 7-5.
