CASSTOWN – Miami East was celebrating Homecoming and wanted to make sure the visiting Blackhawks from Mississinawa Valley didn’t spoil the festivities.
Just before the start of the game the Vikings crowned their queen and king for 2015. Queen was Lindsey Black, and King was Nathan Teeters.
Miami East set the tone quickly and took just five plays to get on the scoreboard that was capped on a 8-yard run by Kurt Brower, and the extra point was good by Colton Kowlak to put East up 7-0.
Mississinawa Valley tried to answer on a big 35-yard run by senior Tyler Jenkinson, which had the Hawks up to midfield, but the drive stalled.
Miami East again went to work in short order. This time it was Logan May, who put it in the end zone to go up 14-0.
Brower punched one in at 3:43 from the 2-yard line to go up 21-0 and with just 14 seconds left to play in the first quarter Aaron Adams would rush one in from 50 yards to go up 28-0
It didn’t get any better for Mississinawa, who struggled throughout, going three-and-out most of the first half. The Blackhawks struggled to catch the ball or get any kind of ground game established.
Miami East tacked on 20 more points to go up 48-0 at the half. The Vikings rushed for more than 500 yards in the first half led by Brower with more than 200 yards. May also rushed for more than 100 yards as well.
Early in the second half Miami East was looking to score again … but junior defensive lineman Wade Gilbert stopped the East drive on the 10-yard line. Gilbert snatched the handoff and raced 30 yards out to the 40-yard line to help keep the Vikings out of the end zone.
The Blackhawks traded punts and deep in their own territory finally struck pay dirt on a huge 89-yard run by Nathan Rammel to get the Hawks on the board to avoid the shutout.
The Viking would go on to record a 48-7 league win over Mississinawa and raise their record to 4-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference and travel to Bethel Friday.
Mississinawa Valley goes to 0-5 and 0-4 in the conference and will be at home celebrating their own Homecoming Friday by welcoming Twin Valley South to town.
