DARKE COUNTY – A pair of juniors who are leaders for their teams and among the top statistical leaders in Darke County are this week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week.

This week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week are Ansonia volleyball player Lydia Sink and Arcanum football player Brandon Kinney.

Sink is in the top five among Darke County volleyball players with 210 kills and 31 aces this season. The junior is among the top 10 in the county with 30 blocks and also has 108 digs.

“Lydia has been a great leader for the team this year,” Ansonia volleyball coach Jason Hemmelgarn said. “She is one of the most competitive people we have coached and brings intensity and energy to practice and the game floor.”

After earning second team all-Cross County Conference honors last season, Sink had to battle back through injuries this year including a shoulder injury to return as one of Ansonia’s go-to players.

“She worked really hard over the summer to prepare herself physically and fight through all of the injuries she’s had to help give her team a chance to be successful,” Hemmelgarn said. “We’re proud of the leader she has grown into and looking forward to seeing her grow and improve the rest of the season.”

Kinney had a dominating performance to lead Arcanum to its first victory of the season last week, a 53-0 Homecoming victory against National Trail. In the game Kinney scored five touchdowns, which included four rushing touchdowns on offense and a fumble recovery for a touchdown on defense, and also cracked his helmet.

The junior ran for 191 yards on 17 carries against National Trail, an average of 11.2 yards per carry. He also was second on the team with eight tackles in the game and also returned a punt for 38 yards.

“I doubt too many people in the county had a game like he had this past Friday,” Arcanum football coach TJ Powers said. “He had a tremendous game. Ran hard.”

For the season Kinney is second among all Darke County football players with 746 rushing yards and also is second in tackles with 58.

Kinney averages 7.2 yards per carry and has run for 11 touchdowns on offense. On defense he has forced a fumble and recovered two fumbles to go along with his 58 tackles.

“He does it on both sides of the ball,” Powers said.

While Kinney isn’t a very vocal person, he always leads by example, Powers said. Whether it’s in a game or a practice, he never gives up and always gives 100 percent.

“He kept plugging away, and he kept plugging away,” Powers said. “He’s just a great kid, a great football player.”
