ANSONIA – It was homecoming at Ansonia as the Tigers welcomed Arcanum to town.

The Tigers crowned their very own quarterback Dane Wentworth as king and Shelby Hartzell as queen.

It didn’t take long for Arcanum to put the coronation behind them as the Trojans took just two plays to get on the scoreboard.

Daniel O’Donnell tossed a 40-yard pass to Cole Burrell to start the game and then called his own number around the right end for a 20-yard run to go up 6-0.

On the ensuing kick-off lightning struck in the form of freshman Devyn Sink, who out ran everyone 70 yards to tie the game 6-6.

O’Donnell on the second play of the following possession raced 57 yards to pay dirt and Brandon Kinney ran for the two-point conversion, and just like that the Trojans were back on top and we still had 9:23 on the clock in the first quarter.

The O’Donnell show continued at 5:56 he galloped 50 yards for the score and added the extra point to make it 21-6.

Arcanum added one more score before the end of the first quarter. With O’Donnell still trying to catch his wind, he handed off to Kinney, who weaved his way 40 yards for the touchdown as the Trojans went up 28-6.

Ansonia, however, didn’t pack up and leave … with the Trojans stuffing their run game the Tigers took to the air.

King Wentworth connected on a 40-yard pass to Aydan Sanders to end the first quarter. The duo did it again to start the second quarter, this time 10 yards to the end zone as the Tigers narrowed the score to 28-12.

Arcanum answered with its own aerial connection an 18-yard hook up from O’Donnell to Kinney … and with 7:39 still to go in the first half the Trojans led 35-12.

Kinney expanded the Trojan lead on an 18-yard run with three minutes to go in the half to go up 42-12.

Kinney wasn’t finished and added a 40-yard touchdown run with one minute left in the half as the the Trojans enjoyed a 49-12 advantage at the half.

O’Donnell struck one more time on the first play from scrimmage after the break, sprinting 70 yards untouched completing his night with his fifth touchdown.

Ansonia got a 60-yard run by Sanders, and Wentworth capped off the drive on a 1-yard plunge to complete the scoring for the game in the final stanza.

Arcanum earned a 55-20 Cross County Conference win over Ansonia.

“It feels good to get the win, our second in a row,” Arcanum head coach TJ Powers said.

“I’m real proud of these guys. They played hard and gave a great effort tonight.

“We lost our heads a little in the first half, and we cleaned it up after a good talking at the half,” Powers added.

O’Donnell scored five touchdowns and Kinney four in the win.

“It was a great game tonight by our quarterback and fullback … our offense is predicated on the option game and with our line executing those two guys played it well,” Powers said.

“Even though I don’t think we are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, unless there is some miracle, next week is shaping up to be our playoff game,” Powers said.

“We are playing a really good Troy Christian team next week, and I want to see our guys rise up and treat it like it’s a playoff week and go after them,” Powers concluded.

Arcanum goes to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference and will travel to Troy Christian on Friday.

Ansonia falls to 1-6, 0-5 in the CCC and travels a few miles over on Ohio 47 to take on Mississinawa Valley Friday.
