COLUMBUS (AP) — Week 7 of football around Ohio saw plenty of action and a wide range of emotions depending on the outcome.
There likely was no greater swing than the closing seconds of the Youngstown Boardman-Warren Harding game when Boardman’s attempt at the winning field goal was blocked, only to be turned into a touchdown for the Spartans in their 18-14 victory.
Boardman trailed 14-12 when Adam Deeley lined up for a field goal from the Harding 12-yard line to give the Spartans a 15-14 victory on the final play.
First, he had to endure two timeouts by Harding. Once he booted the ball it was blocked by Harding’s Chris Clarke and the Raiders and their fans started celebrating as fireworks went off in the corner of the end zone.
Not so fast. Boardman’s Gaven Strines picked up the live ball and ran into the end zone for the 18-14 victory.
There were other fabulous finishes:
Coldwater senior Kyle McKibben kicked a 44-yard field goal with two seconds left for a 17-14 victory against Maria Stein Marion Local. His previous long field goal was just 19 yards.
The win for the Cavaliers (7-0) ended Marion Local’s 43-game winning streak dating to a 27-0 loss to Coldwater on Oct. 12, 2012.
Despite the defeat, Marion Local (6-1) remained atop this week’s Associated Press Division VI poll, while Coldwater garnered all 27 first-place votes in Division V.
In Springfield, Beavercreek’s Michael Chuck kicked a field goal as time expired and the Beavers defeated Springfield, 31-28.
Meanwhile, Oak Hill drove 75 yards in four plays in just 29 seconds to defeat McDermott Northwestern 30-23 on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Lane Burdine to Cody Swann with 14 seconds left.
Also, Trotwood-Madison scored with 37 seconds to play but failed to convert a two-point conversion and lost 21-20 to Troy, giving the Rams their first Greater Western Ohio Conference North loss since joining the division in 2008. Hayden Kotwica threw for a touchdown and ran for two for Troy.
BIG GAMES: Cincinnati St. Xavier ended Cincinnati LaSalle’s 14-game winning streak with a 24-14 victory. LaSalle hasn’t beaten he Bombers since 2010….Josh Pickett ran for 258 yards on 17 carries — including touchdown runs of 68, 65 and 44 yards — and had an 85-yard kickoff return for another score as East Palestine upset previously-unbeaten Columbiana Crestview, 47-34.
FOOT NOTABLES: North Canton sophomore quarterback John Keller threw six touchdown passes and ran for another in a 48-42 win vs. Green. Hoover trailed 14-0 after the first quarter but Keller had five TD passes — three for more than 60 yards — as the Vikings took a 34-28 halftime lead. He finished with 331 yards through the air. … North Robinson Colonel Crawford quarterback Will Kirkpatrick ran 27 times for 181 yards, and running back Blake Treisch ran 12 times for 147 yards, in a 42-20 win over Akron Manchester. … Hunter Hovest rushed for five TDs as Pandora-Gilboa beat Vanlue 56-0.
RECORDS: Glouster Trimble senior tailback Justice Jenkins broke the school record for rushing yards in a career during a 41-14 win over Racine Southern. Jenkins rushed for 254 yards and four touchdowns, giving him 4,693 career yards. He broke 2011 graduate Tyler Dyla’s mark of 4,586 yards. … McArthur Vinton County senior Tim Ousley set a pair of rushing records in a 53-6 win over Stewart Federal Hocking. Ousley rushed for 296 yards and five touchdowns. That broke Beanie Wards’ single-game mark of 267 yards, set in 1975. Ousley also became the school’s all-time leading rusher with 2,891 yards. The previous mark of 2,698 yards was set by 1998 graduate Todd Braden. … Steve Cunningham threw for 365 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two scores in Hamilton’s 34-22 win over Middletown. Cunningham broke his own single-game passing yards record and single-season school marks for TD passes and passing yards….Hamilton Badin fullback Cody Boxrucker ran 12 times for 153 yards and two touchdowns to become the school’s all-time leader in career points (260) and rushing yards (2,894).
GETTING DEFENSIVE: Swanton’s Gunner Oaks had two interception returns for TDs (34 and 20 yards) while Zack Dziengelewski returned a fumble 22 yards for a score in a 56-28 win over Patrick Henry. Oakes also caught a 28-yard touchdown pass….Danville (7-0), top-ranked in Division VIII, has five straight shutouts for the first time in 80 years. The Blue Devils have outscored opponents 285-0 in the past five games. … Hicksville got a 64-yard interception return for a TD from Trevor Kreiling, a Payton Tunis 47-yard pick-six plus Dillion Fuller’s 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in a 43-0 win vs. Johnstown Northridge. … Vinnie Giordano, Wellsville’s leading tackler for a fourth straight season, recorded his 400th career tackle in a 41-6 win over Leetonia Friday. … Andrew Koenig of Plain City Jonathan Alder made four interceptions, three of which led to touchdowns, in the Pioneers’ 35-14 win over Marion Harding. He also caught a touchdown pass.
ON THE OFFENSIVE: Perrysburg and Sylvania Southview combined for 44 points in an 8:53 span of the third quarter. Perrysburg led 14-10 at the half but exploded for 31 in the third quarter en route to a 53-29 victory. … Greenwich South Central’s Cam Conaway rushed for 245 yards and five touchdowns in a 33-13 win over Ashland Mapleton. … Athens senior tailback Zacciah Saltzman had 404 all-purpose yards in a 49-34 win over Pomeroy Meigs. Saltzman rushed for 304 yards and seven TDs, returned a kickoff 81 yards and also completed a pass for 19 yards.
