Maid-Rite announces sportsmanship winners

The Maid-Rite Sandwich Shoppe has announced its sportsmanship award winners for the week of Nov. 19. The winners are Emma Howard, Jr. High girls basketball; Jarrod DeMange, Jr. High boys basketball; Kyleigh Clark, Jr. High cheerleaders; Casey Willis, Jr. High wrestling; Nyesha Wright, Girls basketball; Bryce Shilt, Boys basketball; Courtney Bryson, Reserve and Varsity cheerleaders; Zane Macillas, Reserve and Varsity wrestling; Pablo Badell, Boys and Girls swimming; and Kelli Kretschmar, Boys and Girls bowling.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Versailles defeats Delphos St. John’s

VERSAILLES – The Versailles girls basketball team had four players score in double figures in leading the Lady Tigers to a 77-49 win over Delphos St. John’s.

Junior Brooke Stonebraker led the way for VHS with 15 points followed by Lindsey Winner with 14, Danielle Kunk with 13 and Caitlin McEldowney with 12. Versailles also had five other players score in the game.

DSJ was led by Paige Gaynier with a game-high 19 points. Betty Vorst also contributed 18 for Delphos.

The win improved the Lady Tigers to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Midwest Athletic Conference. Versailles will travel to Covington on Saturday.

Lexington’s Cade Stover named 32nd Ohio Mr. Football

COLUMBUS – The Ohio Mr. Football Award was announced Wednesday, along with the Division I All-Ohio football team, by a statewide media panel. The awards were selected by members of the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association in coordination with the Ohio Prep Sports Writers Association announced Lexington senior Cade Stover as Ohio’s 32nd Mr. Football for the 2018 high school football season.

He led Lexington to a 7-4 record which included a playoff win over Tiffin Columbian. He led his team with 175 tackles including 11 for loss, one sack, two forced fumbles, four interceptions and nine pass break ups He finishes his career at Lexington with 592 total tackles, 21 tackles for loss, four sacks, eight interceptions, six forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and 24 pass breakups as he lined up all over the field in his safety-hybrid position.

“I couldn’t even tell you what it is like right now,” Stover said. “Just to be mention with all those guys who have won it, that is a sweet feeling. I don’t know what else to say.”

Other finalists for the award included C.J. Charleston of Gates Mills Gilmour Academy, Brady Blattner of Byesville Meadowbrook, K.J. Price of London, Ethan Heller of Thornville Sheridan, Miyan Williams of Cincinnati Winton Woods, Jamir Thomas of Massillon Washington and Mark Waid of Girard.
