Trio of Darke County runners earns spot at state cross country meet

TROY – A trio of runners from Arcanum, Bradford and Versailles earned spots at the state cross country meet with their performances at Saturday’s regional meet at Troy.

Versailles boys cross country runner Joe Spitzer in Division II and Arcanum girls cross country runner Marcy Bradshaw and Bradford girls cross country runner Karmen Knepp in Division III all earned spots at the Ohio High School Athletic Association state meet.

In the first race of the day, Knepp and Bradshaw punched their tickets to the state meet by finishing in the top 16. Knepp finished seventh in the Division III girls race with a time of 19:48.0, and Bradshaw finished 11th in 20:00.8.

Joe Spitzer finished 12th in the Division II boys race in a time of 16:24.2 to earn a spot at state.

Other Darke County runners finished their seasons at the regional cross country meet.

Arcanum’s Isaac Stephens finished 41st in the Division III boys race with a time of 17:37.0 while Franklin Monroe’s Cole Van Hook finished 46th in the race with a time of 17:43.0.

Franklin Monroe’s Nicole Brocious finished 78th in the Division III girls race with a time of 22:37.7 to finish her season.

The Versailles girls, who were the lone Darke County squad to qualify for regionals as a team, finished 10th in the Division II girls race as the Lady Tigers all ended their seasons.

Kara Spitzer led Versailles as she finished 26th overall with a time of 20:06.5. Also for the Lady Tigers, Kenia McEldowney finished 56th in 20:55.9, Brynna Blakeley finished 70th in 21:22.5, Liz Watren finished 71st in 21:24.0, Tori Schulze finished 76th in 21:30.8, Hannah Rose finished 96th in 22:22.4, and Madison Grilliot finished 104th in 22:45.9.

Bradshaw, Knepp and Joe Spitzer all will run in the OHSAA state meet on Nov. 7 at National Trail Raceway in Hebron. The Division III girls, which includes Bradshaw and Knepp, will run in the day’s first race at 11 a.m. Joe Spitzer and the rest of the Division II boys will run at 2:15 p.m.
