Franklin Monroe boys soccer team falls in district final

XENIA – Franklin Monroe knew it would take a perfect game to beat Cincinnati Country Day and a little luck to go along with it as well.

The Jets played aggressive and confident for nearly 23 minutes of the first half until a mistake opened the door and a header by Davis McMaster just got over the top of keeper Matthew Poe and just under the top cross bar to put the Indians up 1-0.

The score would remain 1-0 at the break.

“They are a strong team, and we came out and played well for most of the first half … but we made a mistake and they capitalized. That’s what good teams do. They make you pay,” Franklin Monroe boys soccer coach Danny Diceanu said.

Things didn’t get much better early in the second half for FM as the Country Day scored on a penalty kick and followed that up with a goal kick in traffic up the middle to go up 3-0.

The Jets made several attempts to try and get back in it, and every attempt was just off the mark or swallowed up by the goalie as Country Day went on to record a 3-0 win.

“I’m really proud of my guys and their effort today,” Diceanu said.

“We were playing the No. 3 team in the state, who we lost to earlier in the year 4-1, and we knew it was going to be a tough game. It wasn’t a blowout. We had some chances … maybe not as many as they did, but in the end it was our mistakes that beat us,” Diceanu said.

“I’m not sure how many people realize how tough it is, to win five straight sectional titles,” Diceanu said. “We worked on improving our schedule, and this year was one of the toughest in the area. That’s what we need to do to get better so that we can break through and get past the districts,” Diceanu concluded.

Franklin Monroe ends its season with a 15-5 record, a fifth straight sectional championship and a Cross County Conference championship.
