GREENVILLE – Greenville dropped a 56-38 MVL matchup with the visiting West Carrollton Pirates in a game that saw the Green Wave battle back from a 23-10 first half deficit.
“I thought the kids played their hearts out tonight for four quarters,” said Greenville coach, Bobby Jones. “Our kids are coming to the gym every single day and giving me everything they have.”
The Pirates took the opening period 8-6 and extended its lead to 23-10 at the break outscoring the home team 15-4 in the second period of play.
Greenville put 11 points on the third quarter board while West Carrollton was adding 13 points sending the teams to the final period of play with the Pirates leading 36-21.
“You know your team is turning the corner – especially a team, a group of guys that hasn’t had much success winning through the years,” Jones stated. “You know they are turning the corner when you walk into the locker room and all their saying is; ‘we’re in this game, we’re still in this game’ because they know when they knuckle down they are very solid defensively.”
The Green Wave cut the Pirates lead to fourth quarter single digits before Carrollton made it a 20-17 final period score to earn the road win over Greenville.
“We worked a lot on attacking traps and taking care of the basketball,” said Coach Jones. “We didn’t turn the ball over as much tonight as we have been. Once we got settled down in the half court we were able to execute, work the ball, find the open man and go to the basket.”
“I thought our effort for four quarters tonight was phenomenal,” Jones concluded.
