Tri-Village boys basketball team defeats Jefferson in semifinal of Patriot Holiday Classic

NEW MADISON – Tri-Village was hosting its second Patriot Holiday Classic tournament. The first game saw Eaton come away with a victory over Greenon 81-50.

Tri-Village won the second game 73-38 over Jefferson to earn the right to defend its title at 7:30 p.m. tonight when the Patriots take on the Eaton Eagles.

It took a while for Tri-Village to get in the flow. With the game tied at seven with four minutes to play in the opening quarter Tri-Village went on a 11-point run with five Patriots scoring while holding Jefferson in check to lead 18-7.

Gavin Richards scored eight points in the second quarter, Trace Couch six and Tyler Van Winkle five as the Patriots built a 36-14 halftime advantage.

In the third quarter Van Winkle was feeling it, connecting on four triples to go along with his two in the first half, giving him six for the game, on his way to a 20-point night.

Tri-Village would go up 60-30 at the end of the third quarter.

“We were a little careless with the basketball in the second half,” Tri-Village boys basketball coach Josh Sagester said. “I realize we were up by 35 points at one time, and it’s hard to keep teenager’s attention … but we are going to have to a do a better job of making decisions with the basketball.

“I thought a couple of times instead of making the easy pass we wanted to make a spectacular one, and tomorrow night we won’t get away with that,” Sagester added.

In the final stanza the Patriots rolled on to a 73-38 win over Jefferson.

“Offensively we did some good things tonight, and we got a good game from Tyler Van Winkle, Trace Couch and Gavin Richards,” Sagester said.

“Eaton has a nice team. They’re going to try to do some things in the half court and are fairly unconventional. They will press in the full court so we are going to have to handle the basketball better than tonight, rebound the ball and play fairly well,” Sagester said on the match-up for the title game.

The Patriots were led by Richards with 24 points, Van Winkle had 20, and Couch 17 in the win.
