GREENVILLE — A Covington woman was sentenced to 18 months in prison after violating the terms of her community control on a conviction for child endangering.

Vanessa Lynn Keen, 21, of Covington, was sentenced for endangering children, a third-degree felony, in September for reportedly having her 2-year-old daughter present during the manufacture of methamphetamine. She was given 60 months of community control, and ordered to complete parenting education and 75 hours of community service. She was sentenced to 111 days in jail, with credit for the full time already served.

Three days after that initial sentencing for child endangering, Keen tested positive for opiates and methamphetamine use, according to court documents. A week later, she again tested positive for opiates and admitted to the Adult Probation Department that she had overdosed on heroin over the weekend.

She had previously been found in violation of her bond when she failed to appear for an appointment at the probation office, admitted to smoking marijuana and tested positive for the use of opiates and Buprenorphine.

In her initial sentencing, Judge Jonathan Hein, Darke County Common Pleas Court, informed Keen that if she violated the terms of her community control she would be subject to up to 18 months in prison. He sentenced her on Friday to that full amount, with credit for 111 days served.

“Prison accomplishes the principles and purposes of sentencing, in view of prior failed attempts at community control sanctions and lack of additional community control sanctions,” her sentencing document states. “The persistent nature of the defendant’s unlawful conduct — and the lack of honesty with both the Court and herself — leads the Court to conclude that a punitive sanction may be the greatest deterrence to further illegal behavior.”

Keen may be subject to up to three additional years of supervision under post release control, to be determined by the parole board at the time of her release from prison.
