Holzapfel arraigned in fatal crash

GREENVILLE — A 23-year-old Greenville man with a history of driving under the influence convictions has now been arraigned for driving the vehicle that killed his teenaged friend.

Tyler L. Holzapfel, of Greenville, was indicted on a charge of aggravated vehicular homicide, a first-degree felony, as well as driving under the influence, driving under an OVI (operating a vehicle while impaired) suspension, failure to stop after accident and furnishing alcohol to a minor, based on an investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.

Holzapfel is accused of driving the pickup truck that overturned Aug. 2, killing 19-year-old Samuel Barga. He has at least three previous convictions for driving under the influence, as well as an earlier conviction for underage consumption of alcohol.

Holzapfel was among the recent grand jury indictments reported by R. Kelly Ormsby III, Darke County prosecutor. Also included in the report were the following:

-Paul E. Brown Jr., 41, of Greenville (Union City, Ohio), indicted on a charge of aggravated possession of drugs (methamphetamine), a fifth-degree felony, based on an investigation by the Greenville Police Department. He was arraigned and released on an own recognizance (OR) bond.

-Travis A. Hines, 22, of Union City, Indiana, indicted on a charge of possession of heroin, a fifth-degree felony, based on an investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office. Bond was set at $20,000.

-Brandon B. Hartman, 24, of Union City, Indiana, indicted on a charge of possession of heroin, a fifth-degree felony, based on an investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office. He was released on an OR bond.

-Joshua J. Sims, 39, of Dayton, indicted on a charge of possession of methamphetamine and illegal vonveyance of prohibited items onto the grounds of a detention facility based on an investigation by the Union City, Ohio Police Department.

-Tony Gilbert, of Greenville, indicted on a charge of three counts of corrupting another with drugs, fourth-degree felonies, based on an investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office. He was released on an OR bond.

-Douglas R. Sleppy, 47, of Greenville, indicted on a charge of breaking and entering, a fifth-degree felony, and petty theft, a first-degree misdemeanor, based on an investigation by the Greenville Police Department. Bond was set at $15,000.

-Ricky Lee Hartwick Jr., 30, of Lake Orion, Michigan, indicted on a charge of two counts of receiving stolen property, fourth-degree felonies, based on an investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office. He entered a guilty plea to one count, and the other was dropped. He was sentenced to 21 days in jail with 21 days credit for time served, with consideration for charges pending in Michigan.

-Jordon L. Gary, 23, of Greenville, indicted on a charge of aggravated vehicular assault, a third-degree felony, and two counts of driving under the influence, first-degree misdemeanors, based on an investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office. He was released on his own recognizance.

-Christopher M. Odum, 38, of Greenville, indicted on a charge of domestic violence, a third-degree felony, based on an investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office. He was released on an OR bond.

-Shane C. Rayburn, 24, of Greenville, indicted on a charge of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, based on an investigation by the Greenville Police Department. Bond was set at $100,000.

-Edward E. Evilsizor, 43, in custody of the Ohio Department of Corrections, indicted on a charge of pandering obscenities involving a minor, a second-degree felony, based on an investigation by the Greenville Police Department.

-David H. Allread, 36, of Greenville, indicted on two counts of trafficking in heroin, fifth-degree felonies, based on an investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office. He was released on an OR bond but was then arrested for failure to comply with the terms of his bond when he admitted to heroin use on Nov. 10 and overdosed on heroin Nov. 11. Bail was set at $50,000.

-Kyle W. Black, of Portland, Indiana (Sterling, Virginia), indicted on a charge of possession of heroin, a fifth-degree felony, based on an investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office. He was released on an OR bond.

-David L. Harrison, of Wayne Lakes, indicted on a charge of grand theft, a fourth-degree felony, and receiving stolen property, a fourth-degree felony, based on an investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office. He was released on an OR bond.

-Bradley M. Hogue, 34, of Oxford (Mason), indicted on a charge of grand theft, a fourth-degree felony, based on an investigation by the Greenville Police Department. He was released on an OR bond.
