DARKE COUNTY – A pair of versatile athletes who can help their teams in many ways are this week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week.

This week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week are Greenville boys basketball player Isaiah Gable and Versailles girls swimmer Abbey Marshal.

Gable has been one of the area’s top scorers this season as he’s third among all Darke County boys and third in the entire Greater Western Ohio Conference with 20.4 points per game.

At 6 feet 6 inches tall, the junior is a tough match up for opposing teams. He’s made half of his shots this season, including 36.5 percent from beyond the 3-point line.

“Isaiah has improved his game so much in the last year,” Greenville boys basketball coach Mike Bashore said. “His ability to score inside and out has made one of the tougher match ups for our opponents this year.”

Gable not only is a great scorer. He’s a well-rounded player. The Green Wave junior is one of the top five rebounders in Darke County with 6.3 a game and one of the top 10 in assists with 2.5 a game.

Gable was a key piece of Greenville’s GWOC North championship team last season, and he’s only made himself better this year.

“Isaiah puts in a tremendous amount work year round to make himself better,” Bashore said. “Always has a great attitude and has been a lot of fun to watch grow as a player the last three years.”

Last week Marshal helped lead the Versailles girls swimming team to the championship at the Coldwater Cavalier Invitational, which is the unofficial Midwest Athletic Conference meet.

She won the 100 yard breaststroke at the meet and finished second in the 100 yard butterfly. She also was part of the 200 yard medley relay and 200 yard freestyle relay squads, which both won championships at the Coldwater meet.

“Throughout the season, Abbey has helped the girls team to win many swim meets,” Versailles swim coach Penny Cromwell said. “She has participated in the (Ohio High School Athletic Association) state swim meet for the past three years and is ready to go back again this year.”

Marshal leads all Darke County girls with a time of 1:10.82 in the 100 breaststroke and a time of 1:02.88 in the 100 butterfly. The senior is second in the county in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.85 and fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.78.

She holds the Versailles record in the 200 individual medley and is a member of the school record-holding 200 freestyle relay team.

Marshal swam the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly at the start of the season. But after dropping so much time in the 100 breaststroke at the Southwest District Classic, which is the largest high school swim meet in the nation, she turned her attention to the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke for the OHSAA postseason meets. She also will be part of two relays as she tries to make it to state for a fourth time.

“Abbey has the dedication and determination to be successful,” Cromwell said. “Often she puts in extra time at the swimming pool to better herself. She can also be found cheering for her teammates. She has a great attitude and her hard work is paying off. She’s a competitor.”
