Versailles boys basketball team clinches share of MAC title

DELPHOS – The Versailles boys basketball team clinched a share of the Midwest Athletic Conference championship with a 61-46 win at Delphos St. John’s on Friday

Versailles jumped out to a 23-8 first quarter lead and increased its lead to 44-24 at halftime. St. John’s cut its deficit to 54-36 in the third quarter, but Versailles hung on for the 15-point win.

Justin Ahrens led Versailles with a game-high 18 points in the victory. Also for the Tigers, Brett McEldowney scored 13 points, Alex Wendel scored 13, Austin Knapke scored nine, AJ Ahrens scored four, Keaton McEldowney scored two, and Jared Niekamp scored two.

Robby Saine led St. John’s with 15 points. Also for the Blue Jays, Ryan Hellman scored nine points, Owen Rode scored six, Jared Wurst scored five, Jesse Ditto scored four, Josh Warnecke scored three, Owen Baldauf scored two, and Collin Will scored two.

Versailles improved to 15-4 overall and 7-1 in the MAC with the win while St. John’s fell to 7-11 overall and 1-6 in the MAC.

Versailles will try to win the MAC championship outright when it plays host to Minster on Friday. At 5-2 the Wildcats are in a four-way tie for second place in the conference along with Coldwater, Fort Recovery and St. Henry.
