UC will not abandon wells

UNION CITY, Ohio — Union City village council met in special session Monday evening to vote on an EPA recommendation to abandon village wells.

The EPA recommended the wells be closed because they are no longer used by the village, which gets its municipal water from Indiana. The recommendation was shared with council at the last regular council meeting two weeks ago, but the EPA required a response before another regular meeting was scheduled.

Mayor Scott Stahl told the council members that there were two options: abandon the wells or continue testing — with the latter as the considerably less expensive choice.

Citing the exorbitant cost of sealing the wells, council voted to continue testing on the wells.

In other action, council also voted to adopt an ordinance modifying the rules and regulations for municipal utility services. The ordinance establishing the municipal utility regulations was originally passed in 2007.

The ordinance applies to the water supply system, waste water system and waste hauling. For detailed information on the municipal utility rules and regulations, contact the village office.
