Music is capable of speaking to us on a deeper level than just listening with our ears. Music has the ability to ignite our thoughts, influence our feelings, peak our emotions, and (penetrate) resonate within our hearts. Music is powerful and can create a positive influence.
Recently I’ve recalled a song from Frank Sinatra, which got me to contemplating who are among the very young at heart and what makes them young at heart? After identifying people that I label “young at heart” I’ve come to the following conclusion; the young at heart are in love with life and people. They find joy in their everyday, aren’t afraid to try new things and remain lighthearted even in disappointments.
As the song goes “Fairy tales can come true, it can happen to you if you’re young at heart. For its hard, you will find, to be narrow of mind if you’re young at heart.
You can go to extremes with impossible schemes. You can laugh when your dreams fall apart at the seams. And life gets more exciting with each passing day. And love is either in your heart, or on its way.
Don’t you know that it’s worth every treasure on earth to be young at heart? For as rich as you are, it’s much better by far to be young at heart.
And if you should survive to 105, Look at all you’ll derive out of being alive! And here is the best part, you have a head start if you are among the very young at heart.”
Of course being young at heart doesn’t retard the external effects of aging, so remember as Mark Twain once said “wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been.”
Last week i was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist. I noticed his DDS diploma on the wall, which bore his full name. suddenly, I remembered a tall, handsome, dark-haired boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 30-odd years ago. Could he be the same guy that I had a secret crush on, way back then? Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding, gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was way too old to have been my classmate. After he examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended Morgan Park High School… ‘Yes. Yes, I did. I’m a wild cat,’ He gleamed with pride… when did you graduate?’ I asked. He answered, ‘In 1977. Why do you ask?’ You were in my class!’ I exclaimed. He looked at me closely. then, that ugly, old, bald, wrinkled faced, lard bottomed, gray-haired, decrepit turd asked, “What did you teach???”
Upcoming events:
Tonight’s Summer Gazebo entertainment is Elaine and Ron Marshall. They’ll be playing at the fountain square from 7 – 9 p.m. or, in the event of rain, they will be in the St. Denis Church basement. I think you’ll like their taste in music.
This Saturday, there is a walk/run event called “Going the Distance for Young Life 5k” in town at Midmark. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. with same day registration and packet pick-up from 7-8 a.m. The event is $20 for adults and only $5 for kids 14 and under.
Next Friday, at 6 p.m. begins the Darke County Relay for Life, an event that raises money to be utilized in the Darke County for those combating cancer. Since most of us go out for an evening meal on the weekends won’t you please consider a grilled marinated tenderloin, walking taco, burger, or chicken and noodles at this event held in Heritage Park? There will be entertainment and games for all ages, but especially the young. All booths are operated by Relay teams from every town in Darke County and most of all remember all proceeds benefit our friends, family and neighbors battling cancer.
