Faber talks tax reform, higher education

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senate President Keith Faber (R-Celina) spoke to the Celina Rotary Club Tuesday about the highlights of the recently-passed state operating budget and the ongoing effort to improve higher education affordability.

The Rotary Club, of which Faber is a member, met at the Mercer County Civic Building to hear an update on the initiatives Faber has led to make Ohio a more attractive place to attend college, start a business and find a job.

“In the state budget we passed in June, I am proud to report that we cut state income tax rates by 6.3 percent across the board,” said Faber. “We know that small businesses employ 70 percent of Ohioans, so we also prioritized significant tax cuts for them as well.”

The budget signed by Governor Kasich on June 30 continues a 75 percent tax cut on small businesses with income up to $250,000 and completely eliminates taxes on these businesses by FY17.

“We’re all aware of the crippling burden that the cost of higher education imposes on families,” continued Faber. “This budget freezes college tuition and general fees for all two- and four-year schools directs all public universities to reduce overall student costs by 5 percent.”

When asked about Governor Kasich’s presidential bid, Faber said,”The rest of the country is taking notice of the remarkable economic turnaround that Ohio has experienced in recent years. The Ohio General Assembly continues to work in tandem with the Governor to enact policies that boost the economy and provide more opportunities for all Ohio families to get ahead.”
