Can you believe it? We’re coming up on the 38th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death! Yep … Aug. 16, 1977 was the date!
I was never a huge fan of Elvis but I do remember where I was when I heard that he had passed away. I was eating dinner with my newly-wed wife at Boggs Coffee Shop in Ironton, Ohio.
I can guarantee you that around Aug. 16 the media will converge onto his home at Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee, and there will be hundreds of his fans there playing his music and holding candlelight vigils.
Probably most of us are familiar with some of Elvis’ songs like: ‘Jail House Rock’ … ‘I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You’ … and he even sang church hymns too like ‘How Great Thou Art’. Can’t you hear Elvis crooning … “Are you lonesome tonight?”
Well … are YOU lonesome?
Are YOU feeling lonely?
Statistically speaking, it should be impossible to be lonely on the planet earth. After all, there are billions of us running around the big ‘ol sphere.
But…many people in our world are lonely.
Older adults are lonely.
Kids are lonely.
Widows are lonely.
Spouses are lonely.
Single adults are lonely.
If you’re feeling lonely – may I offer you some encouragement?
Using God’s Word – let’s discover how the following three actions can help to ease loneliness:
* LEARN CONTENTMENT: Read Philippians 4:1-13 – then ask God to help you depend on Him each day and to learn to be content in every situation.
* DO GOOD FOR SOMEONE: Read Hebrews 13:1-3 – then seek out someone in need of help. You’ll get rid of loneliness for both of you!
* WORSHIP WITH GOD’S PEOPLE: Read Hebrews 10:21-25 as it emphasizes the value of worshipping with other believers. Don’t miss out on worshipping God with your church family this weekend.
If you’re feeling lonely – lean on Jesus for contentment … help someone else … and worship God with other believers. These actions will redirect your thinking and will remind you that when you know God – – you are never alone!
