Best Bite Grill offers family dining

VERSAILLES — Area residents hankering for a pork chop, a burger, a salad, or other tasty meal options now have a new dining destination.

The Best Bite Grill, 22 N. Center St., Versailles, opened its doors July 21, and, according to co-owner Leslie Coomer, business has been good.

“We’ve had a great reaction, a great response from the community,” she said. “Though we’ve had all our tables filled at points, I don’t want people to be scared off thinking they can’t find a seat. Come in and give us a try.”

The new restaurant is owned and operated by Leslie and her husband, Bill, Coomer. The couple purchased the building in 2010. Locals will remember the building as the home of “Sam’s Place,” a longtime Versailles bar.

“We renovated the upstairs apartments first,” she said. “The rentals up there have helped us fund the restaurant downstairs.”

The Best Bite Grill is a second business venture for the entrepreneurs, as Bill also owns Aesthetic Finishers, a powder-coating facility in Piqua.

Leslie, herself, is no stranger to the business world, having worked in the human resources department of Whirlpool in Greenville for eight years.

She says that the couple launched the restaurant because they saw a need for what she calls “a family-friendly dining experience” in Versailles.

The restaurant features both tables and booths, with a seating capacity of 75. On one wall, diners will see large blowup photos of historical people and places in Versailles.

On Sundays, the eatery features a Sunday buffet, and is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. only.

“This is sort of an after-church alternative,” said Leslie, “for those who don’t want to drive too far to enjoy a good meal after church.”

She laughed, mentioning that her husband called the Sunday buffet “wedding reception food.”

“I didn’t know what he meant at first,” she admitted. “Now I do.”

The restaurant’s specialties, or “BBG signature items,” are marked with a tractor silhouette on the menu. These include a Fried Bologna sandwich, a Pork Tenderloin sandwich, a four-piece Pan Fried Chicken dinner, or the “Versailles Hot Brown” dinner, described as “roasted turkey breast served open faced with crispy bacon, tomato slices and a light cheese mornay sauce.”

Speaking of sauce, Leslie says that all salad dressings and sauces served by the restaurant are “made in-house, from scratch.”

“In fact, all of our food is homemade, fresh, never frozen,” she added.

Daily “Hot Plate Lunch Specials” include country style noodles (Tuesday), lasagna (Wednesday), meatloaf (Thursday) and broasted chicken (Friday).

The restaurant features appetizers, such as loaded potato skins and mozzarella sticks. French onion soup is a regular menu item, along with a featured soup of the day.

Diners may create their own salad at the salad bar or eat a specially prepared salad from the kitchen. Entrees include steak, pork chops, grilled or fried chicken, fish, and shrimp, as well as sandwich options such as burgers, pulled pork, and Philly cheesesteaks, among others. All sandwiches are served with freshly cut fries.

The eatery also offers kid’s meals, with items like macaroni and cheese, mini burgers and chicken bites.

On Aug. 28, at 10 a.m., the Versailles Chamber of Commerce will officially welcome the new restaurant with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Best Bite Grill is open Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is closed Mondays. The restaurant’s website is
