GREENVILLE — The Miami Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is still seeking teams to participate in its October “Greenville Walk to End Alzheimer’s.”
Katie Mauch, walk coordinator for the association, was at The Bistro Off Broadway on Thursday, signing up teams for the walk.
“Today’s event is for learning about the walk, getting the resources they need for fundraising and growing their team, and giving them a chance to ask questions about our chapter,” she said.
The Miami Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association serves a nine-county area, including Darke County.
Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, affecting an individual’s memory, thinking and behavior. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and affects more than 200,000 people in the state of Ohio alone.
Present at the sign-up event were Darlene Byers and Dorthy Lentz.
Byers said she was at the gathering to sign up her team, “Memories of Momma — Mary Ellen McGee,” which is named in honor of her late mother.
“My mother had Alzheimer’s Disease and passed away in 2008. I’m currently the caregiver of a patient with Alzheimer’s,” said Byers.
She added, “I feel called to do this, called by God, as a caregiver. Never underestimate Darlene with a prayer and a plan.”
Lentz’s team, “Lentz/Flatter,” will also be participating in the walk.
“I’m taking part in the walk on behalf of my husband Ed, who is in an Alzheimer’s care facility,” she said.
A first-year contributor, Lentz is chairman of the Mission Committee and is currently the area’s top fundraiser.
“I get shivers thinking about it, to be able to contribute to something so important,” she said. “It is devastating to watch what this disease has done to my family.”
The Greenville Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be held Saturday, October 3, 2015, at Greenville City Park. Teams will check in at 9 a.m. at Shelter 1 with the walk scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The walk route is approximately two miles in length, with an option for a shorter route.
Each registered participant who achieves a fundraising minimum of $100 will receive an official walk tee shirt. All funds raised benefit the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Those interested in signing up a team or receiving further information on the walk may call Katie Mauch or Marie McLaughlin at 937-610-7014, email [email protected] or visit the association’s website at alz.org/walk.
