The next big event in Darke County will be the fair. Everyone is busy with plans to exhibit, to work or to just have fun. If we can gauge by the summer weather so far, then pleasant days are ahead. So stash back some personal financing and get ready for the traditional smells and sounds of the fairgrounds.

School will be later in opening doors for the autumn start of academics. Many other districts have actually started and others will be opening soon. Tri-Village will open Sept. l. Never till the fair ends!

This is a very special month for Vivian Falknor. She called to tell me that she is turning 90! Happy birthday. A card would brighten her day. Vivian is a lifelong resident of the community. The widow of Fred, she is the mother of Lonnie, Lee and Lyle.

Sarah Bevins was recently remembered with a softball tournament. Her parents organized the event to help raise funds for scholarships in her name. Tim and Pam Bevins wanted to honor their daughter’s memory after her accident. It has been a huge success and this year had 20 teams participate. The event was held in Arcanum.

The New Madison Public Library will not have an adult evening program this month. It will resume in September with “Emergency Preparedness” and the “Pillowcase Project” on Sept. 22. The Northern Miami Valley Red Cross will present the information.

The library has announced participation in the Food for Fines program during September. This is a statewide program to help provide food. Check your bookshelves, drawers and under the bed. That was a favorite place for reading material when our kids were little. Turn the material into the library with help for the food pantries. Everyone wins!

Also helping out with a food pantry, the United Methodist Church will be travelling to Greenville’s Grace Resurrection on Water Street on the second Thursday of the even months. The church is also taking up supplies for the local school district. Children who need paper and pencils can count on the community. Several sources for supplies is available and if you want to give them to the church to give to the school, you can do so through Aug. 24. Lots of stores are having sales on supplies so it is a convenient time to pick up items that will ensure all children having materials on hand for projects and posters.

Our granddaughter’s wedding was lovely and happy. We enjoyed the week end celebrating with family and friends. And Bill Marshall did the same thing on the same weekend. Fred’s son, Michael, was married in West Virginia.

The Legion will resume activity after the fair. The auxiliary hopes to meet with the two Buckeye Girls State representatives. Paige Sloan and Meghan Brandson of Tri-Village were sponsored.
