So many exciting things have been happening in the Union City area. The Union City Junior Senior High School Cheerleaders are now Indiana State Fair Champions in their class!!
Congratulations to all the girls who worked so many hours to accomplish this lead by Coach Jefferis and Coach Bradbury. Union City is very proud of this beautiful group of young ladies who represented their school and won!
The work continues on the Amphitheatre, and is proving to be a very attractive structure for the Artisan Park. As volunteers make so many things happen, let’s take a look at one organization this week, The Union City Lions Club was formed in 1947. This dedicated group provides so much funding to a variety of things. The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Union City Community Room, 103 N. Columbia St., Union City and hold a board meeting the third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m.
Activities for fund raising include two Pancake Breakfasts which serve 500 – 700 people at each breakfast. Every eight weeks a blood drive is sponsored by the Union City Lions in collaboration with Miami Valley Blood Bank to benefit the community blood bank. Each blood drive sees 35-45 donors.
Monies raised by the philanthropic group are donated to the sponsor the Halloween Parade prizes totally $500 in cash and the Easter Egg Hunt with another $500 in cash prizes for the children who participate. Each child also gets candy purchased by the Lions Club. Other organizations benefiting from this active group include the Union City Swim Team; Little League Program; Union City Arts Festival and the Lights in the Harter Park during the Christmas holiday.
Members volunteer in a variety of ways, helping build the planter boxes at the new Artisan Park, manning the booth in Harter Park during the Lighting of the Holiday in the Park, help set up “put-put” golf during State Line Heritage Days. This group, if asked, will provide manpower for almost any Union City Project. This fall begins another of their project. The sale of a variety of nuts at MainSource Bank on Elm Street, Union City, Ohio. The first weekend of each month beginning Sept. 4 and 5 through May they will have a variety of snacks, trail mix, nuts, redhots, gummy bears, yogurt pretzels, sunflower seeds and many specialty nuts for cooking or snacking. This year’s chairman is Mick Carpenter who is married to Karen, is the father of three children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. They always have a very large garden and enjoy preserving the produce for all the family each summer and fall. Also in the fall as a Carpenter tradition is Apple Butter time in October. More about that in a future article.
