GREENVILLE — Pheasants at Greenville City Park’s Peafowl House now have a new roof over their heads.
Work on the metal roof was completed by Gabriel Tamplin of GMT Roofing in Greenville. The materials for the roof were supplied by a donation provided by Roger Snider of Greenville, made on behalf of his late wife.
“My wife, Judy, was deceased in 2013. She left money to the park. She enjoyed everything about the park,” said Snider.
The Peafowl House is home to five silver-tailed pheasants — four females, and one male, named “Elvis.” All five were donated to the park by Greenville’s Edgetown Veterinary Clinic. The building is also used to temporarily house ducks from the park that have suffered injuries.
Park Superintendent Deb Berger said that the Park Board hopes to also repaint the Peafowl House and perhaps seek out a local artist to paint a mural on its exterior.
In addition to the new roof at the Peafowl House, nicknamed “The Quack Shack,” GMT re-roofed the stone shelter near the Peacock House.
The renovations taking place at the park are part of a larger plan for upgrades at the grounds. A brand-new Peacock House has been constructed near the current building housing the birds. Berger said that soon the peacocks will be relocated to their new home.
“Hopefully we’ll be moving them in by the end of September,” she said.
The peacocks, however, will need to wait until fencing is installed, something Berger says should begin as soon as next week.
As for the disposition of the old Peacock House, Berger says it will be taken apart, and that, if possible, concrete slabs recovered from the building will be recycled to create a walkway around the birds’ new home.
She offered her appreciation to GMT Roofing and Snider, saying, “I want to thank GMT for their good work on this roof and their past donations, and also thanks to Roger Snider for everything he’s donated to the park.”
