GREENVILLE — Mary (Powell) Martin was the second-place winner in the oldest person at the fair this past Monday.
Born Aug. 28, 1914, she has a long history with the Great Darke County Fair.
“Her great-grandfather headed the fair board at one time,” said Martin’s only son Richard. “And, she is a great-niece of Annie Oakley, and her father had the first pharmacy in Greenville.”
According to him, her mother’s family were the Powells, Plessingers and Yorks.
“She worked at Fram and is retired from there,” the son said.
The centenarian is the widow of Eugene Martin, who after World War II, founded the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post, according to her son. And, she is the oldest member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
She will soon turn 101.
