Arcanum man critically injured in gun accident


ARCANUM – A man was critically injured Sunday after a firearm discharged in his leg while he was cleaning it.

At approximately 6:07 p.m. Darke County deputies along with Gettysburg Fire, Arcanum Rescue, and CareFlight were dispatched to an address on Gettysburg Pitsburg Road in reference to the gun shot wound.

The preliminary investigation showed that Riley Cottrell, 21, of Arcanum was attempting to clean his firearm when it accidently discharged striking him in the leg. Cottrell was initially treated by Arcanum Rescue then transported from the scene to Miami Valley Hospital by CareFlight. He is currently listed in critical condition at Miami Valley Hospital.

This incident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.
