Versailles girls golf team qualifies for state

MIAMISBURG – The Versailles girls golf team qualified for state by finishing third in an Ohio High School Athletic Association district tournament at PipeStone Golf Club.

Versailles shot a 372 in the Division II sectional to earn the final state-qualifying spot. The Lady Tigers join champion Chaminade Julienne with a 362 and runner up Alter with a 369 as the teams to qualify for state from the Southwest District.

Kenton Ridge finished fourth with a 381, Carroll finished fifth with a 385, Fenwick finished sixth with a 390, Miami East finished seventh with a 398, Indian Hill finished eighth with a 402, Fort Loramie finished ninth with a 410, Russia finished 10th with a 411, McNicholas finished 11th with a 430, and Wyoming finished 12th with a 448.

Senior Maddie Covault led Versailles with an 18-hole round of 87 in the district tournament to place 13th overall. Also for the Lady Tigers, junior Lauren Heitkamp shot a 91 to place 18th, sophomore Lauren Durham shot a 96 to place 29th, sophomore Jorja Pothast shot a 98 to place 32nd, and freshman Morgan Heitkamp shot a 124 to place 68th.

Arcanum senior Haleigh Shaffer shot a 104 to place 45th and end her season.

Monroe junior Sammi Blackburn was the tournament medalist with an 18-hole round of 71. She qualified for state individually along with Seven Hills senior Alyssa Akiyama, who shot a 73, and Fort Loramie junior Emily Knouff, who shot a 75.

Versailles now advances to the Division II state girls golf tournament, which will be held Oct. 16 and 17 at The Ohio State University Gray Course in Columbus.
