NEW MADISON – Members of First Universalist Church of New Madison are proud to announce Marling Band Shell in the Greenville city park has been chosen to receive all proceeds from the 15th annual Harvest Sounds benefit concert.
The concert will be performed at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1 at First Universalist Church of New Madison, 331 East Washington St., New Madison, Ohio.
The 81-year-old Marling Band Shell and the 146 year old Greenville Municipal Concert Band have a long history together. Beginning in 1869, nearly every Sunday evening from the July 4th weekend to Labor Day, music has filled the summer air. Now the venerable old band shell is in need of restoration and rebuilding, and will soon witness an extensive upgrade.
Performing to benefit the Band Shell Project will be well-known musicians who are part of the summer concert series in the park. Opening the show will be Terri Fryman and son Darrell with a piano duet of “This Little Light of Mine.”
Fryman appears as keyboardist with the municipal jazz band at the summer park shows, and frequently at Harvest Sounds programs, always leaving the audience asking for her return.
Also on the program will be flutist Margaret Schryver and Susan Harris, oboist, pianist. They have chosen Beethoven’s “Turkish March” op. 113, “The Easy Winners” by Scott Joplin and “Too Blue to Cry” by Lee West.
First Universalist Trio, Roberta Feltman on piano, Lloyd Ketring on organ, and flutist Margaret Schryver will present “Amazing Grace.”
Headlining the program will be the popular local group, The Green deVilles. The band includes Cindy Slick, singing songs by Patsy Cline, Etta James, Adele and more, with country her main influence. Will Stacy, bass and vocals, having played with several rock bands, spent 25 years in the Trojans Band and three years with Four Front Band.
Jeff Barga has loved drums since he was old enough to comprehend what they are. He plays a variety of music, currently working with several groups. Bill Westfall has played guitar in many types of bands over the years, playing rock, contemporary, and country. Besides the Green deVilles, he currently performs with The Avalons, and works duo gigs with J. R. Price when the opportunity arises.
J. R. Price serves as director of the Greenville Municipal Concert Band and will be performing with the Green deVilles at the benefit. He is the orchestra director for Greenville City Schools and the Jazz Scene at Greenville Senior High School. He also performs with many groups throughout the Miami Valley. His talent on saxophone is legendary, and perfect for instrumental solos and backing on songs that others are performing.
Tickets for Harvest Sounds are $10 and may be purchased from members of First Universalist or at the door the day of performance, with no charge for students through grade 12. Following the concert will be a reception and fall refreshments.
