GWOC, MAC teams continue in OHSAA football playoffs

COLUMBUS – Three Greater Western Ohio Conference football teams and four Midwest Athletic Conference football teams will continue their journeys in the playoffs this week.

Half of the GWOC’s teams won their first-round games in the Ohio High School Athletic Association playoffs while all four of the MAC’s teams won their first-round games. Both of the Cross County Conference’s playoff qualifiers lost in first-round action.

GWOC members Wayne and Springboro will meet in the second round of the tournament at 7 p.m. Saturday at Centerville. Competing in Division I Region 2, third seeded Wayne beat 14th seeded Reynoldsburg 56-14 in the first round of the tournament while 11th seeded Springboro upset sixth seeded Mason 42-21.

GWOC member Trotwood-Madison, the third seed in its region, began the Division III Region 10 playoffs with a regional quarterfinal win against sixth seeded Celina 44-14. Trotwood-Madison now advances to play second seeded Tippecanoe, a future GWOC member and the second seed in Region 10, at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Wayne. Tipp began the playoffs with a 37-12 victory against seventh seeded Piqua from the GWOC.

MAC member Coldwater, the third seed in Division V Region 18, started out the postseason with a 42-0 win against sixth seeded Bethel-Tate. Coldwater now advances to play second seeded Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Piqua. Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy beat seventh seeded Richwood North Union 49-27 in the first round of the playoffs.

MAC member Marion Local, the top seeded team in Division VI Region 22, beat CCC member Miami East 48-23 in the first round of the playoffs. Marion Local now advances to play fifth seeded West-Liberty Salem at 7 p.m. Saturday at Wapakoneta in the regional semifinals. West Liberty-Salem beat fourth seeded Cincinnati Country Day 21-7 to start tournament play.

MAC member Minster, the top seeded team in Division VII Region 26, beat eighth seeded Fort Loramie 37-7 in the regional quarterfinals. Minster now advances to play fourth seeded DeGraff Riverside at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Sidney in the second round of the playoffs. Riverside beat fifth seeded Ada 32-7 last week.

MAC member Fort Recovery, the third seed in Division VII Region 26, started the playoffs with a 62-34 win against Cincinnati Miami Valley Christian Academy. Fort Recovery will play seventh seeded Lehman Catholic in the second round of the playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lima Senior. Lehman beat the region’s second seed, CCC member Covington, 20-16 in the first round of the playoffs.

GWOC member Miamisburg, the fourth seed in Division II Region 6, lost 44-42 in overtime to fifth seeded Lima Senior in the opening round of the playoffs.

GWOC member Vandalia-Butler, the eighth seed in Division II Region 6, lost its opening round tournament game to top seeded Cincinnati La Salle 52-14.
