Preliminary Darke County school test results released

DARKE COUNTY — The Ohio Department of Education has released the preliminary results for the spring testing in state school districts. Testing covered English, Math, Science and Social Studies.

The state full report cards are to be released in January. The preliminary results do not have grades for the schools, and there is no Performance Index or Value-Added numbers to show overall student knowledge and academic progress.

There also are no comparisons to previous years, which would prove misleading because of the state’s shift to different learning standards and new tests.

The preliminary results show the percentages of students by grade level who scored at each of the five performance levels – Limited, Basic, Proficient, Accelerated and Advanced – for each of the subjects tested. The overall percentage for Proficient or above also is given.

Ohio’s results also cannot be compared to results in other states that participated in PARCC this spring, with more students being rated Proficient in Ohio.

Ohio legislators voted to stop using PARCC after complaints about the amount of time spent testing and problems with taking the tests online. Because of this, Ohio did not use the same score ranges and labels as other PARCC states.

The state tests in English language arts, Mathematics, Science and social Studies were administered for the first time during the 2014-15 academic year. The Math and English language arts tests were produced by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), of which Ohio was a member until July 1, 2015.

Ohio used the five score ranges set by PARCC but with the labels previously used in test results. While PARCC’s labels consider only to top two scoring categories to meet expectations, Ohio’s top three score ranges are considered Proficient or better. So students labeled as Approaching Expectations in other PARCC students would be labeled Proficient in Ohio.

Future tests in math and English language arts will be Ohio-specific tests developed by Ohio educators with the American Institutes for Research (AIR). The science and social studies tests will continue to be Ohio-specific tests developed by Ohio educators in cooperation with AIR.

The full results can be found through the website at http://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Testing/Testing-Results/Results-for-Ohios-State-Tests.
