Tri-Village girls basketball team continues to roll with win vs. Mississinawa Valley

NEW MADISON – Mississinawa Valley was riding high after opening the season with a 65-59 win over Northeastern, Indiana. Tri-Village, too, was feeling good after winning its holiday tournament.

In the early going it looked like the two teams were going to be in for a good one as the lead went back and forth. Mississinawa went up 7-6 on a Kelsie Hunt fielder inside at the 3:09 mark of the opening quarter, prompting a Patriot timeout.

After that the Patriots put it in another gear spearheaded by an aggressive full-court defense that flustered Mississinawa as the Hawks struggled to get the ball in a half-court set.

The defense was so good the Patriots held the Blackhawks scoreless for nearly 12 minutes. That spanned the rest of the first quarter and most of the second quarter until Kylie Willis connected on a free throw with 53 seconds to go in the first half.

“Defensively I thought we pretty good all night, but we stepped it up there when they got that early lead,” Tri-Village coach Brad Gray said.

Offensively the Patriots got it going when Allie Downing scored eight straight points, including back to back triples, as they jumped on top 16-7 to end the first quarter.

“We were out of sorts offensively early on, and part of that was due to them zoning us, and we just were getting inside touches,” Gray said. “Once we emphasized that in one of our timeouts we did a much better job getting the ball inside.”

The Patriots fed Danika Mann in the second quarter as she scored six straight and TV rolled to a 32-9 halftime lead.

“Turnovers got the best of us in the first half,” Mississinawa Valley head coach John Hershey said.

“We started out nice and relaxed and got into a rhythm,” Hershey said. “Give Tri-Village credit, they are a nice ball team and took us out of what we wanted to do. They are a very balanced team.”

The Patriots continued to pound the ball inside to start the third frame as Mann went for nine points softening up the outside. Senior Shelby Dowler took advantage, scoring nine points from the outside in the frame to put TV up 52-18.

In the final stanza Mikayla Stump from Mississinawa got the hot hand, knocking down three of her four triples, and senior Leslie Dirksen hit a couple shots for the biggest scoring quarter of the night for the Blackhawks.

Sophomore Megan Poling scored seven and freshman Emma Printz five points in the final stanza to lead TV to a final score of 70-29 over Mississinawa Valley.

The Patriots go to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in Cross County Conference and will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to undefeated Covington in a key early conference showdown.

Mississinawa falls to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in Cross County Conference action and will host Troy Christian on Saturday.
