Versailles News: Advent is coming

0

The season of Advent begins Sunday. Advent is observed by Christians as a period of spiritual preparation making themselves ready for the birth of Jesus Christ (God incarnate) and to make themselves ready for His Second Coming; be it at death or the end of the world. Such preparation typically involves prayer, fasting and repentance culminating in the hope and joy of God’s son born Christmas Eve.

Churches and many individuals display and light an advent wreath, one candle each Sunday which deepens awareness of the season. The Advent Wreath is shaped in a circle to symbolize the eternal life of God the Father; no beginning and no end. The evergreen used to decorate the wreath also symbolizes eternal life and constancy.

The wreath holds four candles symbolic of the four weeks of Advent. The first two and the fourth candle are violet-colored to signify a time of penance, sacrifice and prayer. On the third Sunday of Advent the candle is rose-colored, which signifies joy because Christmas is almost here.

If you do not have a personal advent wreath it’s not too late. A wreath is easy to make, fun to decorate and spiritually enlightening.

Christmastime is a glorious time as it fills us with anticipation. Like little children we know something wonderful is coming. If I can help announce an upcoming Christmas event or program please submit it to my email address or give me a call.
