SIDNEY — An 11-year-old Sidney boy was recognized by Sidney Police on Tuesday for a heroic act.

On Tuesday morning, Hurley Marrs, 11, was walking on his way to school at Longfellow Elementary when he heard a vehicle crash several blocks away.

Marrs ran to the scene of the one-vehicle accident where a driver had run into a telephone pole. He then used his cell phone to call 911 – and his mother, Rachel Ratliff – and waited with the driver until help arrived.

Sidney Police Officer Kyle Lambdin was so impressed by Marrs’ willingness to run to the scene and help a stranger, that he recommended him for Sheepdog Recognition. The Sidney Police Department honors citizens who help out the community or perform some sort of heroic action as “Sheepdogs.”

Later that morning, Lambdin went to Longfellow Elementary School and in the presence of Marrs’ entire class, presented him with a SPD/Crime Stopper’s Challenge coin.

The dispatcher who took Marrs’ 911 call that morning also noted how well he did in providing details of the accident.

Lambdin told Marrs to stop by the police department in about 10 years for an application.
