NEW MADISON – Tri-Village opened league play hosting visiting Newton and even though the Patriots got off to a slow start they used a big second and fourth quarter to pull away taking a 72-42 win over the Indians.
Senior Knox Morris led the Patriots with five points in the first quarter including a drive to the basket late to give TV a 12-8 first quarter lead.
Gavin Richards helped the PATS go on a 10-point run in the second quarter to go up 26-8.
The Indians struggled to find offense with senior sharp shooter Brock Jamison sitting on the bench with foul trouble.
Newton finally got help from Nicholas Honeycutt to quell the run at the 3:36 mark, going nearly five minutes without scoring.
Brett Boyter and Tyler VanWinkle each had treys and another strong finish at the rim by Morris at the buzzer gave the Patriots a 32-15 halftime advantage.
Jamison came to life in the third frame for Newton, scoring six points, and the Indians cut into the lead to 37-27 with 4:30 to go.
But Tri-Village got some needed scoring inside by Trace Couch and two scores by Jonny Wilson off the bench including a trey to end the third quarter with the PATS up 48-32.
The Patriots appeared to be content running with the Indians, and it played out well in the final stanza as Tri-Village lit it up from the perimeter led by Boyter with eight points and Richards with seven as the Patriots rolled to a 72-42 win.
“We got different horses, and we’re going to run differently,” Tri-Village boys basketball coach Josh Sagester said on the play of his team against Newton. “We did some things in the full court and shot a lot of perimeter shots tonight … but you got to play with the hand your dealt.
“I saw some improvement tonight across the board tonight, and you always look better when your knocking down shots,” Sagester added.
“Our half-court defense was really good tonight, and our defensive rebounding was much better. I told the guys we aren’t quite firing yet on all cylinders, but when we do I think we have a chance at being pretty good,” Sagester concluded.
Sagester also complimented the play he got from seniors Brett Boyter and Knox Morris and some key plays from junior Jonny Wilson with some big rebounds and shots in third quarter.
Gavin Richards led all scorers with 24 points, Brett Boyter had 14 and Knox Morris 13 to lead Tri-Village.
Newton got 13 points from Nicholas Honeycutt, 11 from Brock Jamison and 10 from Brady McBride.
Tri-Village improves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference and will travel to Northridge Saturday.
Newton falls to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference and travel to Sidney to play Lehman Catholic on Saturday.
