Mississinawa Valley girls basketball team loses to St. Henry

UNION CITY – St. Henry came to town to take on Mississinawa Valley, and the Lady Hawks played nice for the first half of the first quarter.

But the pleasantries wore off and the Lady Redskins brought pressure to bear, using it to exploit the Blackhawks for 23 turnovers, which led to many easy scores and eventually a 61-28 win.

In the opening quarter the Blackhawks jumped on top 8-2 until the Redskins connected on a couple of treys, tying it midway through the quarter.

Then the pressure was applied and Mississinawa struggled to beat the press, leading to some easy baskets for St. Henry as the visitors opened up a 19-8 first quarter advantage.

The struggles continued in the second period for Mississinawa, who went nearly nine minutes without scoring until Madison Stachler hit a jumper from the foul line to break the drought … but by then the lead had increased for St. Henry, who took a 31-11 lead at the half.

The Blackhawks played from behind the rest of the game but got some scoring inside from Kelsie Hunt and Leslie Dirksen in the second half … but it wasn’t enough to match the Redskins, who would go on to claim intra county battle between Mercer and Darke counties by the score of 61-28.

“Bottom line too many turnovers today,” Mississinawa coach John Hershey said.

“On the positive side we are getting a little better … it may not seem like it, but we are. It’s a process and we’ll keep working on it,” concluded Hershey.

Kelsie Hunt led the Hawks with a double-double on 11 rebounds and 10 points.

Mississinawa will try and get back on track when the Hawks travel to Bethel on Thursday for a CCC showdown.
