MELTDOWN Winter Ice Festival


RICHMOND, Ind. – A winter wonderland of artistic ice sculptures will transform downtown Richmond and the Historic Depot District into a winter paradise chock-full of interactive events for the entire family – and it’s all free, said orgainzers

During the 3-day winter celebration, visitors can watch international and nationally known, multi-award winning ice carvers, Buddy Rasmussen, Revered Butter, Dean DeMarias, Danny Bloss, Aaric Kendall and Andrew Thistlethwaite, who has several local ties to Richmond, create their magnificent, awe-inspiring, works of art from plain blocks of ice using just their chainsaws, their masterful artistic skills, creativity, imagination and passion.

More than 22 tons of ice will be intricately sculpted into amazing works of art. Each block of ice will be 4 foot wide, 18 inch thick and weigh approximately 300 pounds.

Events and activities include: Array of stunning Ice sculptures; Ice Carving Work Zone – Watch the carvers turn chunks of ice into flawless creations; Interactive Ice Park including an ice pong table, a slide, a throne, etc.; Treasure Hunt; Frozen Fairy Trail; Frosty Mug Pub Crawl; Cork and Canvas; Freeze Your Buns Off Fun Run; Family Games; Paint and Take Souvenir

These are just a few of the free activities being offered during this event. Festival-goers can visit “Hot Spots” (festival warming stations) offering area entertainment, activities and/or piping hot refreshments while also taking in one of the districts’ many unique restaurants, cafés and shopping venues.

The festival’s featured event will be the captivating, high-energy, “Ice Fight” carving competitions between two ice sculptors and 1,200 pounds of ice. See these world-class ice carvers battling it out on the main stage. The highly competitive “Ice Fight” challenges will occur on Friday, Jan. 29 and Saturday, Jan. 30 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

All MELTDOWN activities/events are free and open to the public. Ice sculptures will continue to remain on display, weather permitting. Bundle up for some COOL fun, food and festivities.
