GREENVILLE – Darke County Senior Outreach accepted a donation of more than a thousand dollars toward opening a new senior center in Darke County.
“We’re so happy and grateful to get such a generous donation from Village Green,” said Lindsey Gehret, who heads the board.
Darke County Senior Outreach has a stated mission “to provide resources for citizens 55 and older to remain healthy and independent now and in the future.”
The organization, which is in the process of achieving its 501 (c)(3) nonprofit status, has been working on opening a senior citizen center for Darke County seniors to gather and socialize, with educational, health and wellness opportunities.
Several committee members met recently with the County Commissioners to discuss potential space for the center, as well as the possibility of a capital grant from the state.
Committee members are still continuing to seek appropriate space for the center, and the deadline for the grant was extended, so a grant request was submitted for this year. Included in the grant application were statistics about Darke County and the Community Health needs assessment.
Gehret also will be applying for a Rotary grant to support the mission of the organization.
The group is now looking at insurance, and working on setting up a post office box and a checking account. The recent donation will enable the group to set up the checking account.
The YMCA monthly senior lunch and Reid Health Foundation were discussed for upcoming presentations about Senior Outreach and the planned senior center.
The committee discussed plans for this year’s Senior Citizen Day celebrations during Wednesday’s meeting.
The event will be held May 18 at Romer’s Catering in Greenville. Reservations will be capped this year at 300, which again is an increase over previous years because each year has sold out with a waiting list.
The fee for vendors this year was set at $325, which covers the costs for lunch and flowers. Nonprofits’ booths will be offered at no charge.
The committee chose the menu items for the evening, selecting oven-fried chicken, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, beef and noodles, corn, and cake.
