AKRON – Greenville junior AJ Frens finished as the runner up in the Division I boys pole vault at the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches indoor state championships on Saturday at the University of Akron.
Frens cleared 15 feet 3 inches Saturday to finish second to Massillon Perry senior Lucas Kelley, who cleared 16 feet 5 inches to win the state championship.
The Greenville junior began the competition, which included 18 of the state’s best vaulters, at 14 feet 6 inches, clearing that height on his second attempt. He cleared 14 feet 9 inches on his third attempt and passed at 15 feet. He then cleared 15 feet 3 inches on his third attempt to secure his second place finish.
Frens entered the OATCCC state meet seeded third, having previously cleared 15 feet 6.25 inches.
The runner up finish at the OATCCC state meet continues a strong high school career for Frens. As a sophomore in 2015 he finished fifth in the Division I pole vault at the Ohio High School Athletic Association state track and field meet by clearing 15 feet.
Franklin Monroe junior Nicole Berry also competed at the OATCCC state championships in the Division II-III girls shot put and weight throw.
Berry finished 10th in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet 7.5 inches. After fouling on her first throw, she threw 35 feet 7.5 inches or her second throw and 35 feet 5 inches on her third throw.
The Franklin Monroe junior finished 15th in the weight throw with a throw of 33 feet 3.75 inches. After fouling on her first attempt, she threw 37 feet 6.5 inches or her second throw and then had a throw of 33 feet 3.75 inches on her third throw.
Berry also competed at last year’s OHSAA state track and field meet, finishing 11th in the Division III girls shot put with a throw of 37 feet 1.5 inches.
