Yogurt shop aims for April opening

GREENVILLE – Sweet treats and other good eats will soon be coming to downtown Greenville with the opening of Chillz Frozen Yogurt.

Tonia and Jason Penny, of Greenville, expect to be opening their frozen yogurt shop sometime in April, if work continues well. The couple are renovating the building at 333 S. Broadway, which most recently housed the VAPORville vape shop and previously was home to a branch of Mercer Savings Bank.

The shop will feature self-serve frozen yogurt with a variety of toppings, and customers will pay by the ounce, so they can get their sweet frozen treat exactly the way they want it.

Other kinds of food also will be available for those looking for downtown lunch or a hot meal when the cold weather returns.

Jason and Tonia have never been in business for themselves, but they have experience in food service and wanted to share something they enjoy with the Greenville public.

“We really enjoyed going to the (yogurt shop) we had in town a few years ago,” Tonia said.

Tonia will be working the shop full-time, while Jason, who is a police officer in the Village of Versailles, will keep his regular job and help out in the shop as well.

The renovations have been extensive, but the dust will soon be cleared away for presentation to the public.

“It’s pretty much completely redone inside,” Tonia said. “We’ve got new walls. We’re doing flooring. Of course, it was a bank so we had to install complete plumbing. We’re doing a lot of renovations.”

Tonia said the shop will do some advance tastings for its downtown neighbors, and she is hoping things will be in a sufficient state of readiness for them to participate in the April First Friday event with some samples.

“We are definitely very excited about the idea of helping grow the downtown,” Tonia said. “The community’s beeing doing it (growing) for the last few years, so we’re definitely excited about being down here.”
