GREENVILLE — The 2016-2017 school year calendar, discussion on a proposed outbuilding at the new K-8 building and a new athletic director were among the topics of discussion at the Greenville City Schools Board of Education meeting Thursday.
By a 5-0 vote, the board approved a finalized calendar for the 2016-2017 school year. August 29 will be the first day of class for Greenville students. Christmas break begins December 19 with pupils returning to classrooms January 12, 2017. Seniors will graduate June 3 and the school year is scheduled to end June 7.
The longer-than-usual Christmas break is to accommodate the move of elementary and middle school teachers and students to the new school building on Ohio Street. Construction of the facility is scheduled to be completed in November of this year.
During a work session prior to the regular meeting, the board discussed a proposed outbuilding at the site. Bruce Miller of Garmann Miller & Associates, the firm overseeing construction, showed the board a map of where the building will be located. It will house playground equipment. Under the initial proposal, the building would measure 28 by 48 feet. Miller estimated its cost at approximately $80,000.
Board members expressed interest in considering the project further, and directed Miller to provide a detailed layout and firmer cost estimate.
Another topic discussed was a plan to renovate the parking areas at Greenville High School. Under the plan, the parking lot would be resurfaced, new sidewalks and curbs built and asphalt placed along the tennis courts. Estimated cost would be $230,000. An additional chip and seal repair of the concrete surface along the east side of the high school is estimated at $86,000.
Dusty Yingst, most recently the athletic director at Mississinawa Valley Schools, was approved as Greenville’s new AD by a 4-to-1 vote of the board. He will replace outgoing AD Randy Swisher, retiring this summer.
Among other business, the board reported it had received recognition from the Southwest Region of Ohio School Boards Association, achieving a “Gold Level” as an effective school board.
The board approved a new rate for health insurance for district employees under the auspices of the Affordable Care Act. The plan, for individuals only (no family plan), will be offered in the amount of 50 percent cost sharing. The current contribution for qualifying employees is $287.54 per month. Employees will have the option to take or waive the plan.
The board also approved an agreement with Sinclair Community College for the College Credit Plus Program for the 2016-2017 school year. The program allows students to take courses for college credit while still in high school.
A contract in the amount of $23,430 with Lewis & Michael Moving and Storage, for moving K-8 property from the old buildings to the new school, was approved.
The board approved health and physical education courses be offered during the 2016 summer school. Cost per student will be $115 for resident students and $130 for nonresident students.
The Greenville City Schools Board of Education meetings are conducted the third Thursday of every month beginning at 7 p.m. Meeting times and dates, however, are subject to change. Meetings are held in the Anna Bier Civic Room at St. Clair Memorial Hall, 215 West Fourth Street in Greenville.
