COVINGTON – The Versailles softball team began the season with a pair of losses to Covington on Saturday.
Versailles lost the first game 12-2 in a five-inning run rule.
Covington scored five runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth while Versailles scored both of its runs in the top of the fifth.
Versailles had four hits and nine errors in the game, and Covington had six hits and two errors.
Aimee Powell led the Versailles offense as she went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Kami McEldowney was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Lauren Heitkamp was 1-for-2, and Sarah Gigandet went 1-for-3. Kristin Langston scored a run.
Heitkamp was charged with the loss as she pitched four innings and allowed two earned runs and nine unearned runs on five hits, two walks, one hit batter and two strikeouts. Powell pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed one earned run on one hit and one walk.
Versailles fared better in the second game but still lost 5-2.
After Covington scored a run in the bottom of the first, Versailles took a lead with a single run in both the second and third innings. Covington tied the game in the bottom of the fourth and scored three runs in the fifth to win 5-2.
Versailles had three hits and two errors in the game while Covington had 10 hits and two errors.
Hailey McEldowney led the Versailles offense by going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Langston was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Heitkamp had a RBI.
Powell pitched five innings and allowed four earned runs and one unearned run on nine hits, three walks and no strikeouts. Heitkamp pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and one walk.
Versailles, which is now 0-2 on the season, will play host to Indian Lake on Tuesday.
