LEWISBURG – The Versailles baseball team scored 37 runs on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader against Tri-County North 20-7 and 17-5.
In the first game Versailles and Tri-County North both scored a run in the second inning. Versailles went up 4-1 with two runs in the third and one in the fourth before North tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth. Versailles scored six in the fifth to go up 10-4. After Tri-County North scored a run in the fifth and two in the sixth, Versailles scored 10 in the seventh to win 20-7.
Versailles had 24 hits and one error in the game while Tri-County North had 11 hits and four errors.
Brett McEldowney was 4-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Kyle Rutschilling went 3-for-5 with three doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Keaton McEldowney was 3-for-5 with a walk, a double, three RBIs and two runs scored.
Austin Knapke was 3-for-6 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Cole Niekamp went 3-for-6 with a stolen base, two RBIs and two runs scored. Jared Niekamp was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Collin Peters was 2-for-5 with a RBI and three runs scored.
Kyle Subler went 1-for-4 with two walks, a stolen base, two RBIs and three runs scored. Adam Lyons was 1-for-4 with a walk, a RBI and two runs scored. Jacob Watren went 1-for-1 and drove in a run.
Brett McEldowney earned the win as he pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing six earned runs and one unearned run on 10 hits, one walk, one hit batter and four strikeouts. Knapke pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit and no walks.
In the second game of the doubleheader Versailles scored two runs in the first inning and Tri-County North scored one. In the second inning Versailles and TCN both scored two runs, making it 5-3.
The Tigers started to pull away with five more runs in the third inning and then scored two in the fourth for a 12-3 advantage. The Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and the Tigers scored five in the top of the fifth to win in a five-inning run rule.
Cole Niekamp went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored in game two. Subler went 3-for-3 with a walk, a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Kurtis Rutschilling was 3-for-4 with a double, a RBI and two runs scored.
Peters was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored. Keaton McEldowney went 1-for-3 with two walks and a double. Watren was 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.
Jared Niekamp had a hit, was hit by a pitch, walked twice and scored two runs. Brett McEldowney stole a base and scored two runs, and Knapke walked once and scored a run.
Keaton McEldowney earned the win as he pitched four innings and allowed four earned runs and one unearned run on six hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Lyons pitched one scoreless inning in relief, allowing one hit.
Versailles, who is now 5-0 on the season, will play at Covington on Monday.
