Prom-goers see ‘stars’ at gala for special needs adults

VERSAILLES — “An Evening of Stars” was once again an appropriate theme for the fifth annual spring formal for special needs adults in Darke County and surrounding community.

Everyone who attended the prom Friday night were “stars,” as they glittered and sparkled throughout the evening in the cafetorium of Versailles Local Schools. The theme for the evening was “‘50s/’60s Cruise In.”

According to organizers Janelle Koverman and Denise Good, an estimated 178 people attended the event, including their guests of honor, family members and caretakers.

The first year of the event, it was held at the Versailles Christian Church; the next three years at the Elks Lodge in Greenville; and now, at Versailles Schools.

“Versailles is more handicap-accessible,” said Good.

The prom was open to anyone; however, most of the people attending were associated with the Darke County Board of Developmental Disabilities and the Darke County Home as well as local residential services.

“This is my favorite thing to do,” said David Loewer, an elder and member of the church who mingles with the crowd and dances while he’s doing it.

The Rev. Nick Dimmick, new pastor of the Versailles Christian Church, was in attendance with his wife, the former Jennie Katterheinrich, whose father Kim formerly pastored the church. The couple appeared to also be enjoying themselves as they ventured through the crowds.

D & C Co. of Greenville once again did hair and make-up for the attendees. Excalibur Sound provided the music, fast and slow and obviously popular as the dance floor was hardly not in use, and Jessie Kelsey of Thir13teen Photography was there to take pictures of prom attendees in photo sessions throughout the evening.

Refreshments were also served to those in attendance.
