GREENVILLE – The Greenville softball team handed Piqua its first Greater Western Ohio Conference loss of the season on Wednesday, winning 10-2.
The top of the first inning the Wave put out Piqua 1-2-3. The bottom of the first was a different game, though.
Karsyn Shaffer singled to center field and stole second. Cassie Cromwell then hit it to the fence in center field, scoring Shaffer. Cromwell scored on an Alli Hill sacrifice, making it 2-0.
In the bottom of the third Logan Tabler singled to center field, stole second and a few batters later scored off a Cromwell sacrifice fly.
Greenville continued to add to its lead as Makayla Hanes walked, Hill singled, and Allison Minnich cracked it out to center field to score Hanes, making it 4-0.
Piqua got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth.
Alexis Gordon singled to center field and stole second. Alyssa Jones then reached on an error, which allowed Gordon to advance to third. Reynna Lavey then reached on a fielder’s choice, but Greenville got an out at home.
Mariah Blankenship and Kendra Forness then had back-to-back singles to drive in a pair of runs and cut Greenville’s lead to 4-2.
Greenville added six runs in the sixth inning to increase its lead to 10-2.
Minnich drew a leadoff walk, and Ashton Kester hit a two-run home run to make it 6-2.
Sydney Grote got on second as a result of a Piqua error on a fly ball into center field. Logan Tabler then singled, and Shaffer was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cromwell then hit a RBI double to left field, driving in a pair of runs to make it 8-2.
Hill then reached on an error, which allowed two more runs to score and make it 10-2.
“It was a great game for softball,” Greenville coach Jerrod Newland said. “The stands and all around the field were packed with fans. It was a very intense game, and all of these games just make us better. We will be playing in June so we have six weeks to keep improving.
“We were on a roll. Tonight was great pitching, great playing and a great defense. I am very proud of our girls.
“The fans were very enthusiastic and provided a lot of excitement.
Greenville improved to 10-3 overall and 4-2 in the GWOC North with the win. Piqua fell to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in the GWOC North.
