Versailles baseball team edges Lima Shawnee 1-0

VERSAILLES – If you like pitching Versailles was the place to be Monday afternoon as Versailles and Lima Shawnee displayed a high level with the Tigers edging the Indians 1-0.

Jacob Heitkamp pitched the complete game shutout, allowing only two Lima Shawnee hits, the last of which was a lead-off single to begin the third inning.

That frame was the only trouble in which he found himself. After the hit he walked a hitter and a two-out error filled the bases. Heitkamp now had to face the Indians clean-up batter, who had gotten the only other hit, and he promptly struck him out to end the threat.

That strikeout began a streak of 13 consecutive hitters Heitkamp would retire to finish the game. Through the seven innings he struck out 10 Shawnee batters.

“Anytime we put Jacob out there we get a great outing,” Versailles baseball coach Ryan Schlater said. “We just haven’t been stringing hits together. Fortunately, the one run was enough.”

The lone run of the game came in the Versailles first inning with two outs and nobody on base. Brett McEldowney engaged in a lengthy at-bat that finally ended with a walk. Kurtis Rutschilling, the Tiger clean-up hitter, came to the plate and with McEldowney running on the pitch doubled into center, scoring McEldowney with what would be the game winner.

Versailles swings back into Midwestern Athletic Conference play this week with games at Marion Local today and hosting Coldwater on Thursday.
