Sweet & Sassy: Happy 150th anniversary, Trinity!

The Pitsburg Evangelical Lutheran Church is going to be celebrating its 150th anniversary on Sunday.

Because I didn’t receive the historic information by deadline time and had to write the story without it last week, I decided to let the readers know about that church.

In the mid 1800s in Monroe Township of Darke County, several of the residents living there, some of whom had come from Wurttemburg, Germany, some from New York and Pennsylvania and some who had been in the area for many years, sought to establish their own place of worship according to the Lutheran faith based on Martin Luther’s teachings that we are saved by the grace of Christ Jesus’ death and resurrection.

In August 1865, the Rev. George Bachmann came and preached in a clearing in the woods at what is now Graw Road. He continued to do so for several months before giving notice to the elders of the community to form a council and officially found their congregation. They met on Jan. 8, 1866, elected a council, and laid out the plans to purchase and build a church. At the time of the founding everything was held in German and continued until 1895 when they began to change to English.

Over the course of the next 150 years they outgrew the small 30×25-foot building and moved to the present location in Pitsburg. The church has served the community and its members all these many years and has had to enlarge the facility on more than one occasion. Fifteen called pastors and several interim pastors have served Trinity, though not until 2015 has she had her very own, not shared with another congregation in a two or more point parish. The Rev. Melvin R. Musser is the first exclusive to Trinity pastor in 150 years.

Sunday, the church will celebrate all these 150 years with a prayer service at 8 a.m. at the original site one-fourth mile west of the “Midway” station at the juncture of State Route 49, Schnorf-Jones Road and Graw Road in Monroe Township. At 10 a.m., there will be a half-hour musical praise celebration, worship service with the honorable Southern Ohio Synodical Bishop, Suzanne Darcy-Dillahunt preaching followed by a lavish dinner catered by Michael’s Catering of Greenville and held at the Franklin-Monroe High School at 1 p.m. For more information or to reserve a place at the banquet feast, phone 937-692-5670.
