GREENVILLE — After 40 years fighting fires, and 14 years as the department’s head, Fire Chief Mark Wolf has announced he is resigning his position at the City of Greenville Fire Department.
“I want to tell you that it has been a privilege and honor serving with all of the personnel in the City of Greenville Fire Department since 1988,” he said. “They are an awesome group and I would put them up against any fire fighters in the world. They have a very high skill level and are dedicated to serving the citizens of the City of Greenville.”
Wolf first joined the department on April 18, 1988, and was named Greenville’s fire chief on July 9, 2002. His last day on duty will be July 29.
His resignation points to dramatic changes in leadership at the city’s fire services, coming on the heels of Assistant Fire Chief Dave McDermitt’s departure, who retired at the end of June.
Wolf takes with him decades of experience as a firefighter and emergency medical technician, as well as numerous certifications and memberships in professional associations.
He is a 1976 graduate of Amelia (Ohio) High School. He received his associate’s degree in Applied Science — Fire Science Technology (Summa Cum Laude) in 1992 from the University of Cincinnati and his Ohio Fire Executive licensure in 2004.
Prior to Greenville, Wolf served as a firefighter and EMT with the Withamsville Volunteer Fire Department and Montgomery Community Fire Company.
He has been a member of, and served in many executive positions with, the Ohio Fire Chiefs Association, International Association of Fire Chiefs, Southwestern Fire Chiefs Association, Darke County Association of Fire Chiefs, Darke County Local Emergency Planning Commission, and Ohio Department of Homeland Security Region 3 Rescue Strike Team.
Wolf’s leaving, however, is not a retirement, but represents a new career opportunity for the longtime chief.
“I am moving on to a position with Emergency Reporting as a Trainer,” Wolf said. “Emergency Reporting provides a web-based records management system for the Fire and Emergency Medical Services. I am very excited about this opportunity and will start full time with them August 1.”
At Greenville City Council’s July 5 meeting, Safety/Service Director Curt Garrison announced dates for civil service examinations for positions within the Greenville Fire Department.
The Beginning Firefighter exam is scheduled for August 2 and has been posted on the city’s website (www.CityofGreenville.org). Garrison said the Lieutenant test will be administered September 13. The test for Captain takes place September 8. The Assistant Fire Chief test will be held August 10 and the Fire Chief’s Promotional Exam will be on September 6.
