NEW PARIS — A 29-year-old Preble County man faces felonious assault charges after an incident where he “dragged two police officers” who were attempting to apprehend him from a truck, PC Sheriff Mike Simpson reported this week.

On Thursday, July 7, at approximately 1:15 p.m., deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call for assistance from Dayton Police detectives who were in the 8900 block of Wesler Road investigating a felonious assault case which occurred in Dayton on July 1, where a Dayton Police officer was pinned against a cruiser and the cruiser was struck.

According to Simpson, investigators determined when the Dayton PD detectives approached the residence, a male subject fled the residence. That man, Joshua Childers, was the suspect they were looking for.

Childers got into a pick-up truck that was at the residence, Simpson said.

“Detectives made it to the truck and were attempting to remove him, when Childers fled, dragging the detectives,” Simpson reported. “Childers also struck the detective’s cruiser which was parked in the driveway, with the truck.”

The truck Childers was driving is believed to have been stolen, according to Simpson, as were the license plates on the truck.

Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate Childers or the truck, Simpson said in a press release.

On Friday, July 8, the investigation was presented to the Preble County Prosecutor’s Office and formal charges were filed in Eaton Municipal Court.

Childers has been charged with two counts of first-degree felonious assault, two counts of fourth-degree felony assault, fifth-degree felony vandalism, fourth-degree felony resisting arrest, fourth-degree resisting arrest, fifth-degree obstructing official business, fifth-degree felony obstructing official business, and third-degree felony failure to comply with order of a police officer.

A warrant was issued for Childers’ arrest, according to Simpson. Childers was apprehended in the early morning hours on July 10, at 7667 Old Dayton Road, by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

Childers remains in the Montgomery County Jail on numerous charges.
