Tonight the Darke County Relay for Life begins with opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. at Heritage Park. Please consider supporting your friends and family that are dealing with cancer.
Statistically it would be hard to believe there is anyone unaffected by cancer, be it family member, friend or neighbor. We are all aware of the physical and mental challenges placed on these individuals fighting for health and wellness. Since we are all connected, perhaps we can show our support by attending this function.
Several of the Darke County VFWs and American Legions will be on hand for the opening ceremonies. There will be plenty of food available such as grilled marinated tenderloins, walking tacos, burgers, shredded chicken, etc. All food and activity booths, such as a bake stand, face painting, and a fish pond, are operated by Relay teams from every town in Darke County. The fountain square music will be in Heritage Park, so bring your lawn chairs, or sit in a rocker under the gazebo, enjoy a sandwich, listen to the music, socialize, but most of all, be a part of the crusade.
Another worthy organization “Team Addie Girl” (of which I am a part) will be participating in The Sunshine 5K Run/Walk within the Greenville Park on Sept. 17 at 8:30 a.m. “Team Addie Girl” was started three years ago for Addison Henderson, who at the age of 6, was diagnosed with leukemia. Addison completed her last treatment in January 2015 and she is doing great. For this race only, Team Addie Girl will be walking/running to raise money benefiting the Dayton Children’s Hospital.
The Sunshine 5K Run/Walk is sponsored by the Hope Foundation and returns 100 percent of participant’s entry fee to the hospital. The money will benefit the new oncology unit at the hospital allowing many, many children with childhood cancers to be treated daily. Team Addie Girl wants to thank Dayton Children’s Hospital for all they have done for Addie and all the other children in Darke County and found this race event to be a great way to give back.
“Team Addie Girl” is a non-profit organization who is asking for your support. Registration can be completed at www.darkecountyfoundation.org or www.goodtimesraces.com by Sept. 7. You can register online or print mail-in forms. “Team Addie Girl” is not the only team option so when selecting a team be sure to check “Addie Girl” as the team/organization name. The cost is $15 and includes a long sleeve shirt. If you cannot attend the race, the team will pick up your shirt for you. There are also many door prizes following the race but you must be present to win one. Please invite your family and friends to participate in the Sunshine 5K routed through the scenic Greenville City Park and surrounding neighborhood. Walkers, as well as runners, of all ages are welcome to join the team.
A team picture will be taken the day of the race. We are hoping with everyone’s support to have 200 participants on our Addie Girl Team. It’s early so everyone has plenty of time to get ready for the walk/run. Questions should be directed to the Rebecca Shumaker at 564-8353.

Tonight, from 7-9, Tyler and Mason DeMange will be performing at Heritage Park in conjunction with the Relay for Life. This is free entertainment sponsored by the Towne and Country Players. Bring your lawn chairs, invite your friends and neighbors and enjoy the evening. Mark your calendar for the remaining two Friday evenings of entertainment in July: Music of Jimmy Buffet and the Beach Boys on July 22 and Deron Bell on July 29.
Mark your calendar for an upcoming Webster United Methodist Annual “Ice Cream Social” on July 24 from 4-7 p.m., a Community Pool Party on July 24 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Versailles Swimming Pool, and the Versailles Community Garage Sales held July 28 and 29.
Saturday, North Star Picnic will hold its annual Cruise-In Car Show from 6-10 p.m. and Renegade will be performing from 8-11:30 p.m. Sunday, the 19th Annual Angel Run 5k starts at 9 a.m., with registration one hour before the race. The parade is at 2 p.m. followed by an antique tractor show 2 to 6 p.m. and a talent show from 5-6:30 p.m.
I’d like to pay a special thanks to those who make the Community meal possible every Wednesday from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Trinity Lutheran Church basement, the members of the Towne & Country Players for providing another summer of entertainment and the members of the Versailles Museum for the many activities they provide.
