CELINA – The Greenville football team concluded the July portion of its preseason schedule on Friday in a seven-on-seven passing scrimmage at Celina.
Greenville competed against Celina, Crestview and Parkway in the scrimmage, which was its third and final seven on seven of the summer.
“We had some good things today,” Greenville coach Aaron Shaffer said. “The guys have really picked up the passing game on both sides of the ball.”
Friday was Greenville’s 10th and final permissible camp day of the summer so the Green Wave now are off until Aug. 1 when they officially can begin practicing for the 2016 season.
“Today ends our summer stuff,” Shaffer said. “We just finished our 10th day so we’re as installed passing game-wise as we can be without all of our screen game stuff.”
Having a lot of experienced players back from last season, Greenville’s summer camp went really smooth this year.
“We’re fortunate to have a lot of guys returning in our skill group, actually a lot of guys returning across the board,” Shaffer said. “So installs have been pretty easy in terms of the knowledge of it that we’ve been able to work on more fine tuning the route combinations and routes and coverages.”
While the team has made a significant amount of progress already, Shaffer is ready to get his team in full pads so the Green Wave can really get going in their preparations for the upcoming season.
“There’s only so much you can do as an offensive line, defensive line guy or even linebackers for that matter without pads,” he said. “So here in about a week we’ll be able to get rolling for real.”
